A Christmas Story

To be honest I really have no clue what the first six sentences are talking about and what the meaning is. I feel that the wife is depressed and worried about her husband, while working on the silos. The husband seems to understand her frustration but is not willing to give up his life style of the last twenty years just because it makes her unhappy. The end was really vague and I feel that they are implying that Paul Nordstrom died because of a silo accident and/or maybe their son had been the one who died. Maybe Nordstrom was the guy that cannot hear? Like I said I couldn't really pick out what the six sentences meant nor could I figure out the ending but that is what I came up with.
