A Rose for Emily

A Rose for Emily was written based on life after the Civil War. In this story I think Miss Emily is a woman who doesn’t like change at all. When her father died, it was like she had nothing left to live for. I can relate to that also and it is very tough to lose someone that close. She hid from everyone and everything for years. All she had was her servant for contact to the outside world. Her house was never changed on the outside or inside. She did end up meeting a man named Homer Baron. She now had a man in her life to be there for her. I found it weird and ironic that when she had finally went out in public that she went to go buy arsenic. She obviously wanted him dead as well. In the end of the story Emily finally passes in her house by herself, so everyone thought. After her burial, the townspeople searched her house and they found Mr. Baron’s body up in the attic of the house. He hadn’t been the only one laying there though. There was an indent of someone else’s head with gray hair on the pillow next to him. It was a different but very good ending.

A Rose for Emily

In this story I feel that Emily is stuck in the past. She is stuck in the past with her house in the way that she leaves it how it was. It is never remodeled and no one ever fixes it up. Emily likes everything the way it was. She doesn't pay taxes and she likes how the town just takes care of her. She lives in a routine where everyday is the same. When her boyfriend tried to leave her and mess up her routine she couldn't let that happen. That is why I think she poisoned him with the arsenic. The rose painted room is the same throughoutthe story. I think that it is wierd how she has her old boyfriends body laying in the bed in the rose colored room. I find it even wierder that her hair is on the pillow. I draw the conclusion that she had to of still layed with him. This story was a little confusing for me. I had to read over a couple parts more than once in order to get the full effect. Overall I like this story. It has a good but odd ending.

The Storm

I was confused at first with reading this story. I caught on right away that there were a couple of different relationships kind of goin on, and that it is a very sexual story. It was kind of weird. Not really my type of story, but definatly interesting. The ending also was very odd, how everyone was happy at the end. Which probably meant that she is keepin the whole "cheating" from her husband, and she is not to upset about what she did because she had been wondering what it would be like for awhile. Overall, it was definatly different and interesting.

A Rose for Emily

A Rose for Emily was an interesting story about a woman who lived her life in solitude. From what I remember, when she lost her father it seemed like she lost everything. He must of ment alot to her, as do most fathers. Though it was enough to make her hid away from the world. It seemed to me that the towns people were interested in her not only for her money she owed in back taxes but also just because she was almost bat-like. She would hide in her cave and hardly ever come out. Unlike a bat though she wouldn't come out at night. She had a man whom I'm surprised they refered to him throughout the story as the Negro, and he did most all of her chores for her. The only time the front door opened was when he took off to the story with a grocery basket. Miss Emily wasn't always hiding away though. She had a few outside occurences such as when she met Homer Barron, the Northerner. They suposidly wed and she then had a companion. It was funny because the next time we here of her comming out of the house was when she went to the drug story to buy some very strong rat poison. I could pretty much see what was going to happen after she bought that. Mr. Barron was pretty much good as dead. The end was kind of interesting. The towns people came over once again and the servent let them in then ran out the back door. Emily had finally passed. After the burial the towns people searched the house to find from what took it as Mr. Barrons body in a bed in the very highest room of the house. The creapy thing about the story was that there was an indent of someone else's head on a pillow next to the body and they found a hair that was the same color described as Miss Emily's hair earlier in the story. Fascinating ending.

A Rose for Emily

A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner was written based on life after the civil war in the Southern part of the United States. The main character, Miss Emily, is from a very well respected family in her town and is mourning the loss of her father. When her father died Miss Emily began to shut herself off from people in her community and the only person who was allowed to see her was her one negro servant. Before Miss Emily's father passed away, he arranged for Miss Emily that she would never have to pay taxes again. However, when Colonel Satoris became head of the city council, he wanted to change that. Colonel Satoris and other council men went over to Miss Emily's house and told her that she has to pay taxes just like all the other citizens. Miss Emily did not agree with Colonel Satoris's request for her to begin paying taxes, so Miss Emily kicked them out of her home and ignored what Colonel Satoris told her. Miss Emily had not been out in the town or even had anyone in her home since the man everyone believed was going to be her husband, Homer Barron, up and left her. After Homer left Miss Emily, people in the town started talking and saying that they think Miss Emily was going to commit suicide. Emily becomes very sad after all of this and begins to fall apart, gaining weight, looking much older and avoiding contact with the community. It was not long after that, that Miss Emily passed away. She was no longer happy and didn't have anything to live for her in eyes. The towns people come over to Miss Emily's house for the funeral and go through a tour of the home. The story takes a major twist at this point, when the towns people break down a locked door and find some very disturbing things. They find the remains of Homer Barron, which explains the horrid smell that is explained throughout the story by people in the town. This makes the town then believe that Emily killed Homer, not that Homer disappeared and left Miss Emily.

The Storm

I thought this story was very tense. I loved how the author described the storm through out and made it sound like it was going to be the last of everyone. Bobinot and Bibi, I assume, were stuck in some sort of store where they as safe as could be. Bobinot buying the shrimp for Calixta showed me that he loved her very much and was thinking of her the whole time. While Calixta was at home she seemed very worried about her husband and child. As she was running around the house to prepare for the storm, a neighbor named Alcee came upon the house to comfort her. Now to me, I don't feel like they did anything wrong. Alcee seemed like a good neighbor coming around to check and see if she was OK. Does the story say that they actually kissed? I feel like Alcee has a feeling towards her but wouldn't jeopardize that with Calixta. I feel that the moment during the storm brought a love from Alcee to Calixta which made the letter he wrote sound as though he didn't want his wife to come back home. When Bobinot and Bibi came home it sounded as though that Calixta wasn't thinking of Alcee at all and showed love to the two she cared for the most. I pictured this story in my head as movie with the scene cutting from the house to the store. I pictured a "Little House on the Prairie" setting down south where the houses weren't built to withstand storms such as this. In the end I didn't leave the story feeling that something wrong had happened. I felt that Alcee did what was right and everyone was happy in the end.

The Storm

This story was very interesting. I thought that it was going to be about a storm, as I'm sure many others did. Well, there was a storm, but I don't think that was what the story was about. Calixta seemed so worried about her husband and son when it began to rain, so I was very surprised when Calixta ended up igniting an old flame while her family was stuck somewhere else. At first I thought that Calixta was not going to do anything with Alcee, but I was wrong. The way the two of them just returned to their lives like nothing had happened was crazy. Calixta began to cook for her family as she most likely did regularly and Alcee thought about his wife and babies. It seemed very scandelous, if either one of them would've seemed to feel any kind of guilt it might not have been so bad.

The Storm

Chopin has great detail in her dramatic story of "The Storm." Every description has the reader on the edge of their chair wondering what will happen next. Alcee took complete advantage of the dreary situation and should be ashamed to have led on Calixta. Weather can have a huge affect on a persons feelings and Calixta was terrified of the storm and the safety of her husband Bobinot and son Bibi. She did not have that feeling of safety and comfort until Alcee came along and imaturally soothed her of her worries. It was almost a dream like story Alcee showed up out of no where and left soon after. Im sure Calixta wishes it was just a dream. Once Bobinot and Bibi came home safely Calixta was all affectionate towards her husband from feeling the guilt of what she just did. He husband will probably never find out but if Calixta has never acted this way around him he may become leary. Calixta has to live with the guilt of what happened for the rest of her life which can do great harm not only in her marriage but also mentally.
All in all this story was a well written abrupt love fling that keeps a wondering feeling. At time the story was hard to follow with her choice of words but i enjoyed it very much.

The Storm

I thought, "The Storm", written by Kate Chopin was a very well written story. When i started reading this story I thought I was going to be reading about a storm that happened in a town and it was going to be someones experience during it. Boy was I wrong, it started out the way that I thought it would with a father (Bobinot) and son (Bibi) at the store picking some stuff up for his wife to bring home to her. Then a storm came so Bobinot decided that him and his son Bibi should stay at the store till the storm passed. I couldn't believe that his wife at home ended up doing what she did with a friend (Alcee) that she hadn't seen since she got married to Bobinot five years ago. Alcee needed a place to go to get out of the storm so he went into the house with Calixta, I still am unsure with how far they took it and what they all did if the just kissed and made out or if they ended up having sex but I think the author did that on purpose so your imagination could imagine whatever it wanted to. What I got from it was that they didn't have sex but did about everything else. I was a little confused with why Alcee went home and wrote his wife Clarisse a letter I think he did it out of guilt. The reason I don't think that they have sex is because I don't think that at the end it would have said that after the storm was gone everyone was happy. I don't believe if they did more then making out with each other and if they had sex with each other I don't know how everyone would be happy knowing they cheated on their spouses.
The Storm
I thought, "The Storm", written by Kate Chopin was a beautifully written story. I enjoyed every word. On the other hand I found Calixta's and Alcee's behavior to be absolutely disgusting. As far as i am concerned they gave into the desires of the flesh for their own selfish reasons. From what I can comprehend from the story there is no troubles in either of their marriages. Bobinot seems like a good father and is concerned about his wife's feelings and Calixta is apparently worried about her husband's and son's well being during and after the storm. Clarisse is devoted to her husband, Alcee. Alcee writes his wife a loving, tender letter after his sexual escapade with Calixta. So, there is no information that leads me to believe there is unhappiness in these marriages. The only reasoning behind this act are selfish; desires of the flesh, an old romance, comfort. As for Alcee's letter to his wife, I would like to know the intentions behind it. Does he tell her to stay away so he can ride out his guilt, so it is not as fresh when he sees her again? Does he want to see Calixta again? I don't believe he'll see Calixta again because the closing line is, "So the storm passed and everyone was happy." (259) Im sure everyone wouldn't be so happy if they found out about Calixta's and Alcee's infidelities. Everyone wouldn't be laughing and loving then.

A Rose for Emily

A Rose for Emily was a very compelling story written by William Faulkner. The way it starts out by setting up Miss Emily as a long-standing part of the town gets the reader to connect to her better because most people probably know someone themselves who they can then relate her to. This gets the reader more emotionally involved in the story and makes it much more dramatic for them. I also believe that by writing about how the town was always sympathetic towards Miss Emily that the author was attempting to get the reader more emotionally connected to the story as well. Keeping up with the emotional aspect of the story, Faulkner leaves one wondering as to the emotional stability of Miss Emily while the town observes her life and interacts with her throughout the years. One must also question whether or not the townspeople should have done more to help her rather than just feel sorry for her.

The Storm

This story to me was about two people who had an affair together. The storm in this story was in some sense the storm that these to people also had to go through to have their affair. I like how the author described every detail about the storm that was coming. The way she described the woman lips and her blue eyes in depth, it made it seem like I was there looking at her. At first it was kind of hard to understand how to pronounce the names and certain words but also kind of fun. I realized they were from the south. When a story has some kind of accent. I can tell were the setting is in the story. I think it was great how the storm came about and that it related to the troubles in their life as well. When Alcee had gotten home he had written a letter to his wife telling her she could stay longer in Biloxi, and the fact that she didn"t mind staying longer almost as made it seem as though she to may be having an affair. I enjoyed reading this story. I think I would have like to of read the whole story.

A Rose for Emily

I really enjoyed the story "A Rose for Emily." I liked that the story was not in chronological order, it made me think a lot more. As I read the story I found it was a little confusing at some times because there is a lot going on. It really made me question Emily and who she really was. I didn't understand why when everyone would see her they would say, "poor Emily". Once Emily's father dies, the towns people kept smelling a odd smell from her house, but later in the story the smell all of a sudden goes away. She met Homer, a man who worked for a construction company, when he was cleaning the sidewalks. Soon enough him and Emily fell in love. After awhile he was never seen again. I thought that when Emily went to buy the poison she was buying it for herself. But, as I kept reading I then figured out that she bought the poison for Homer. At Emily's funeral the ladies went up to look in Emily's room. I was very surprised that when they opened the door they saw a body laying in her bed covered in dust, the body was of Homer Barron. The story left me in deep thought. The ending was very quick and left you thinking.

The Storm

As I read The Storm, I found myself thinking that the storyline reminded me a lot of a movie I've seen titled Unfaithful. Many similarities between the two were present and I felt like I was re-watching the movie. However, I found that I liked The Storm more than I liked Unfaithful. For some reason, reading the events allowed me to imagine for myself the emotions that were being felt throughout. I like how Kate Chopin used a lot of detail in explaining events and physical features of characters. When I was reading about Claxita and Alcee's encounter, I felt like I was reading something out of a Playboy. You can truly catch every sensual detail that is given, and almost paint a clear picture of what it looks like. It was the detail that drew me into the story.
I found The Storm to be a unique story because the title is actually a key element. I found it cool how all the events in the story were caused by the oncoming thunderstorm. Rekindled flames, lost happiness, and reunions were all brought about because of the fact people were influenced by nature. The dark mood and suspicous circumstances were made possible by the description of the storm clouds. I also liked how Chopin used a deep south accent for her characters. It was fun to try and pronounce certain slang and whatnot. The one thing I didn't like about the story was how it just went on without any further explanation. I didn't like the fact that the father, Bobinot, never found out about his wife's encounter with her old flame. I don't know why but it just depresses me when I read about that stuff. In the end, I found The Storm to be an interesting read and worth the time to read again.

A Rose for Emily

The story "A Rose for Emily" shows how some try to hold on to the past. Emily grew up in a very conservatory town where her family held a very high status in. The story has a lot of weird twists in it that made me question wether or not Emily was really all there. Emily's father was very controlling and didn't really approve of any of the men trying to court his daughter. Emily charished her father, but maybe a little too much. After his death people said they smelt a funny smell coming from the basement. But, after people complaining it disappeared. I couldn't always follow the story at times it got confusing, Faulkner never comes right out and says what he means. I thought it was really sad how the old mayor had told Emily her family didn't have to pay taxes and when the new mayor came in they tried to make her pay them. Emily meets a man how is fixing the side walks in town, they end up dating and everyone thinks they will get married. Until one day he goes into Miss Emily's house and no one ever sees him come out; I found this very odd. The ending to the story was really shocking I didn't see it coming at all. Miss Emily's death was not very surprising or how people reacted at her funeral; people are alway curious about something that's different. But, what did really surprise me is when they opened the locked room and found a dead man's body and found a grey hair of emily's on the pillow next to it. I think the story was very well written it made me think, but it really left you hanging.

The Storm

This story shows the infidelity in the marriage between Bobinot(the husband) and Calixta(the wife). The story began when Bobinot and his son gut stuck in a Friedheimer's store because of a heavy storm. Back in the house, the wife was worried looking forward to see her husband and child back home and for some reason her ex known as Alcee showed up to seek refuge due to the same storm and for some few moments they recandled their feelings and had intimacy before the storm was over. When the huband and the the son return home Alcee has already left and Calixta in pritence welcome them as if nothing has happened.
Wow, i wonder what men are going to think about women after reading this story, but to me it is an interesting story. Although i don't agree with what Calixta did because she was a married woman and she should have behaved like one no matter how strong the temptation was. Also, i like how the writer described their romancing moments in paragraph 25 t0 30 like " Her mouth was a fountan of delight" and also " He stayed cushioned upon her... with his heart beating like a hammer upon her". This story reminds me of a neighbor in Africa whose husban was a teacher and whenever the husband go to school she will bring her boyfriend into their house and was caught by her husband one day and due to the pains the man used cutlass and cut off one hand to teach her a lesson. He was arrested and sent to prison.

A Rose for Emily

A Rose for Emily was a really interesting story to me. I really respected Emily's rebellion towards the new times that she couldn't find an appreciation for; it said a lot about her character. She had a problem trusting men which is said in many different ways throughout the story and ultimately ends the plot with a twist. Her father had locked her away from the world and when he died she felt a vacancy which was replaced by her sweetheart, who eventually left her as well. As she aged, her lack of social ability really came through and the whole town started to pity and gossip about her. When she found Homer, it was hoped by the townspeople that she would come back to some form of normalcy and get married, but it only got worse.
The lack of intimacy, but respect and care, from the people around town was weird to me. They all cared so much about what was going on with Emily but really only understood her once she was dead. They made decisions for her and gave her certain leeway, sympathetically.
I think they all got an honest view of who she really was when they found Homer's body in the bedroom upstairs. She had no control over him, which lead to the poison. That way, he could never leave her like the rest of them had. She only wanted certain things in her life and lacked that ability as a young girl so it came on really strong as she got older, all the way to obsession.

The Storm

In Chopin's The Storm, a Louisiana woman and man face secret lives and difficult choices. Chopin really is rather racy, but I think the way the plot was mapped and the dialogue made it easier to read. I think if she didn't force you to hear the way they talk and feel the underlying feelings, you would automatically judge Calixta for her indiscretion. With the complete difference in dialect and setting (warm and muggy with "missing" letters compared to freezing cold and emphasis on vowels), Calixta is really just realizing how much she missed her first love, maybe even her true one.
I think it is also important that the rising action of the storm correlates with the rising action between Calixta and Alcee. As the storm gathers, their paths cross, and it becomes a dance of social formality with underlying passion as they remember old times together. The adulterous affair occurs as the storm breaks itself upon them, and she and Alcee wave goodbye as it clears, leaving the world a "sparkling gem". The falling action matches both Alcee's and Calixta's plot and the storm's as well. Marriage is hard, according to my parents, and sometimes it's nice to have a break. The ending, that "so the storm passed and everyone was happy", means to me that maybe not everything was well in Alcee's or Calixta's marriage. There is a possibility that the characters lost some of their identity when they got married, and they missed that part of life. Maybe now that they had this chance at feeling young and independent again, their marriages may be better. Calixta did seem to greet her husband warmly, and even Mrs. Laballiere appreciated her independence. This may tie back to Story of an Hour and Chopin's own life, where civil law in Louisiana made women property of men. Maybe this story isn't necessarily about an affair or the benefit of staying away a little longer, but about how women sought independence by secretly defying their husbands.

A Rose for Emily

In the beginning of the story, "A Rose for Emily" Miss Emily is portrayed as someone important in the community. She is important because everyone is curious to know information about her. Miss Emily is described as a very peculiar woman who does things that most others would not. Living in a large house all by herself was odd for her community. Most African American women of her time would have been married. She kept to herself, and the only person to see her for years was her personal attendent Tobe. Upon her death everyone goes to her funeral. I think the reason they go to the funeral is more because of pure curiosity than grief.
The odd thing about this story is that the author does not tell it in chronological order. It is almost like he wants us to figure out what happened first and so forth. At some point in Miss Emily's life she meets a man who she falls in love with. The man goes into her house and is never seen alive again. The community finds his body in her house at her funeral. Next to his corpse is a long piece of her hair. I don't know if the man loved Miss Emily or not? This story is mysterious and will leave you thinking about it long after you read it.

The Storm

When beginning to read the short story, it took awhile to get in the grove of the spelling and accent they were using, such as "Come 'long in, M'sieur Alcee." It reminded me of Alabama in the earlier years. When first reading we find out information of Calixtas four year old son named Bibi. Taking place on a hot summer day in a little small town in the south. The story had alot of detail, for example when it said "Her lips were as red and moist as Pomegranate seeds." It made me feel like her lips were bright red and luscious. My sentence that stood out the most from the rest of the story was when they were describing Calixta features for example, "Her blue eyes still retained their melting quality; and her yellow hair, dishevelled by the wind and rain." In the last few parts of the story, they didn't mention the Storm that has just passed, but i think the storm still remained in those parts but in a different view. Calixta seemed very paranoid since Alcee was over only a few minutes prier to Bobinot and Bibi's return back to the house. Right as they opened the front door Calixta "Sprang up as they came in." Later that night it tells us that "Alcee Laballiere wrote his wife Clarisse a loving letter, full of tender solicitude" From all the hints it seems like Calixta is hiding important information of her former husband. So the storm is now located in the house of Calixta and Bobinot. That was the story called "The Storm" by Chopin.

The Storm

Besides stumbling along with the words, and trying to figure out how to pronounce them, I figured out this was written about people from the south. Using french names like Bobinot, and phrases like "mama'll be fraid," Made me think of Louisiana, I had visited New Orleans back in 1975 for a convention for the Farmers Union. I didn't quite understand the language they used, and how slow the natives spoke to me when they finally understood what I was trying to say to them. The description of the weather to me almost made me feel like I was in or around a thunderstorm. Setting the story's atmosphere to be hot and steaming only like the south can experience. But blended in the weather came another steamy part among the characters. When Alce'e convinced Calixta not to be afraid of the lightning striking the house, but that was not all Calixta had to fear. The fear of the moment and the heat of the passion was surly to give way here to her and the memories they had together in a earlier time. Blending the description of the the weather and the heat of passions between two people makes this a very seductive story. So reading this storm passage had your mind off the thunderstorm and on the storm which was happening in the house. As the storm passes so doses the characters Calixta and Alcee goes on about their business like nothing happened between them, no feelings, no remorse nor regrets.Even though both of them have other people in their lives, husband wife children what happened in the storm didn't even matter, clouds rolled on and so did they. The only one who experienced mud was the little boy and that was made from the dirt and water not the dirt made by the two adults, and he was the one to be told to be ashamed. Thats what I got out of the storm written by Chopin.

A Rose For Emily

The story, "A Rose For Emily", is one of those stories that kind of leaves you hanging. You don't receive full detail and at the end it makes a person wonder what the story was really about. In the sense that Emily was once a young, beautiful lady who throughout the years had grown into a crabby, old lady. She was heartbroken when the love of her life left her and before that her father had passed on to a better place. She didn't seem to handle life's little obstacles all that well and in turn became a hermit and refused to go out in public. Instead, she had her butler do all of the errands and shopping, in which he never talked either. After many years of sadness she finally passed and the town's people finally felt like they had reason to feel pity and they came to the funeral. I feel as if this story has so much more to tell than just the basic knowledge that is put down on paper. If you really look past it, its a love story within a tragedy. Miss Emily Grierson had finally passed on but know one really knows if she was ever truly happy again, especially after Homer left her. This story was a great read!

I don't really understand what is going on in this story but it starts out with a woman that is sick with allergies or something of the sort. In their country, there have been explodings of silos and their neighbors place has nothing left of it. Then end's significance i think is that his son is riding in his plane and his dad remembers the day he gave the plane to him and i think he's thankful nothing has happened to his family. My overall response to this short story is that it is hard to understand and follow. The ending is the most confusing. I don't really understand the significance of that his son is doing and why his dad would remember the day he gave the plane to him.

A Christmas Story- Larry French

A Christmas Story by Larry French is a short story about a grieving couple. In the first few lines the wife is having a hard time dealing with her loss and she is expressing her feelings to her husband. The husband begins thinking about how they lost their child in the farm accident. The husband then sees the child's favorite toy airplane in the yard and thinks about the memorable time they shared when he bought that airplane for the child.
Well in this story it seems that there was a farm accident. A silo blew up because of the dry period they have had. The lady is uneasy about the accident and worrying about it happening again. The man to me seems like he understands the situation and she just needs to settle down. Will goes outside to catch some fresh air and think a little bit when he sees a toy plane he had bought for his son. This is when his inner child comes out and he decides to sit on the plane. Then he pushes himself down the yard and onto the paved road. He lets himself coast down the road to the neighbors house were he checks out their farm yard. The ending is him reflecting about the toy plane he is in and when he bought it for his son.

A Christmas Story Reaction

I think that in the first couple of lines she is scared. I think she is afraid that there silo will do the same thing it did at the Nordstrom's, explode. I think she is apologizing because she has not been herself lately. I think in the ending he is getting into the little toy plane to get away from everything. I think that it is a way for him to get away from the craziness of what is going on with the silos. My reaction for this story is it is a little confusing. The ending is a little different. I think it is a little hard to get why he is doing what he is doing.
In the opening of the story, "A Christmas Story", a husband and wife are having a conversation. I gathered it was about the wife's mental or physical health. The husband speaks of seeing a doctor but the wife disagrees, blaming something outside. As I read on I think she is terrified of getting out of bed and what will become of them due to the exploding outbuildings. I enjoyed the story but am yet extremley confused. Their son's bed and toys are packed up. Have they lost their son in one of these accidents or have they sent him away to keep him safe? The wife is scared but the husband is trying to be logical, possibly just for his wife's sake. At the end of the story the man goes outside and goes for a ride in his son's toy airplane. The journey down the driveway is difficult, then to learn to steer and in the end the airplane is picking up speed as he thinks about the Christmas he bought the toy for his son. Does this mimic life's journey and his life spinning out of control as the airplane speeds down the hill?

A Christmas Story

The wife is afraid of their silo. It seems like her husband wants her to do something that she is uncomfortable doing because the silo is outside their house. The hot weather and bad ventilation are causing them to explode. I don't know what happened to their son, but I don't think he's around anymore. In the end of the story the husband is messing around with his sons plane, looking at the neighbors destroyed farm, and reminiscing about the Christmas he gave his son the plane. This story is kind of confusing, because of the way it starts in the middle. I didn't like it, there is not enough information to know what the point is.

A christmas story

This story is difficult to understand from the begining. From my personal view, I think the man was apologising to his wife from the first paragraph for runing the airplane into the family silo they have owned for a long time, and the wife was advising him to see a doctor but he was just worried about the destroyed silo.
And the reminder of the story talks about how the man struggle when he tried to operate the plane. I don't like this story, it's kind of backwards and difficult to follow.

A Christmas Story

The woman in the story can't sleep because she's worried about the heat making the silos burst outside. Will, her husband thinks she should go to a doctor for some sleeping medication so she can make it through the night. The heat is creating despair among farmers, which he is worried about and she's worried about her family's safety.

Will is flying down the road in his son's plane, looking at his past (the Nordstrom farm) and looking down at his future (into town), if the weather doesn't stabilize. Though the ride was bumpy at first, he learned how to manage the plane and got into good movement which may represent his life on the farm or his future life elsewhere if things don't go his way.

The story left me hanging. I wanted to know more from the beginning and the end. I dug for a life lesson and there might not have been one in the first place, but I guess it's all what you take from a piece. I saw a man struggling between two life decisions and what's best for his family which is a common problem for many people today.

A Christmas Story

In the begining of this story I believe we have a husband and wife who are in a war. They are afraid and do not know what is going to happen next. They are afraid to go outside because they don't know what could happen. Just reading these first few sentances I am really confused. I am not quite sure what is going on but I can get a general knowledge. At the end of the story the man is reminising on the christmas when they had all been a family. I think that the family has some how lost their son or is losing their son. I feel they are scared because of what has happened. In the end they can always remember their christmas story.

A christmas story

When I first read the story I didn't quit catch on to what was happening, but after rereading it it started to make since. I believe that in the first couple of paragraph a man and his wife are arguing about the silo on their farm and how it is dangerous because they have been exploding. I think something must have happened to the boy because the talk about how the room across the hall was empty. I think the two are arguing about how its not save to have the silos because they have already caused a death and some to lose their hearing.

In the end paragraphs he ride in his little boys plane that they had bought him the Christmas before and reminisces about the gift. He rides the plane down the driveway and looks at what is left of the neighbors farm. I think these paragraphs are significant because he is remembering what things use to be like before these hard times.

A Christmas Story

When I read "A Christmas Story", I can't help but notice that it jumps around a lot. Right from the beginning, you can tell there is something wrong. I picked up right away that the man in the story is a farmer due to the fact he and his wife were discussing silos. However, there was some talk about a child's toys, so that threw me off completely. I think what is going on in the first few lines is that the wife is upset about something and keeps discussing it with a husband who doesn't want to listen. It goes on to reveal that the wife is afraid of the silo on their land because of recent malfunctions that led to explosions. The man shrugs these complaints off as no big deal because he feels he has done everything to make them safe. After leaving his bedroom, the man comes upon some children's toys and decides to play with one especially. He takes this toy plane and rides it down the road. I feel there must have been an accident with possibly the man and wife's child. It may have possibly died due to a silo or maybe a disease of some sort. I also feel that is what the women is talking to the man about at the beginning of the story.

After reading this story, I find myself asking, "What is going on here?" I just can't figure out the main point of this story and it makes me cringe. I normally like stories like this, but this one just doesn't catch my attention. It starts in the middle of nowhere and ends in the middle of nowhere.

A Christmas Story

To be honest I really have no clue what the first six sentences are talking about and what the meaning is. I feel that the wife is depressed and worried about her husband, while working on the silos. The husband seems to understand her frustration but is not willing to give up his life style of the last twenty years just because it makes her unhappy. The end was really vague and I feel that they are implying that Paul Nordstrom died because of a silo accident and/or maybe their son had been the one who died. Maybe Nordstrom was the guy that cannot hear? Like I said I couldn't really pick out what the six sentences meant nor could I figure out the ending but that is what I came up with.
I think that the women in the story is scarred of the silo outside and is unable to sleep and should see a doctor for help. I think that this couple is going through a hard time from losing their boy. I think the man tried to crash the airplane that they bought for their son one christmas into the silo. The ending was unclear and I dont really like the story, it is hard to understand.

A Christmas Story by Larry French

The first six paragraphs were talking about the farmer and his wife. He wanted to take her to the doctor, becasue she was sick. Then it talks about friends of theirs that have already passed away, because they got sick to. They don't give much information about the disease. The story takes a right turn and starts to talk about what the farmer bought his son for Christmas, which was a silver airplaine. The writer gives alot of details about the airplaine. At the end of the story he mentions that he bought the plaine as a Christmas present for his son. I didnt like this story, because it was all over the place. The writer didnt even talk that much about Christmas, so the story should of had a different title.

A Christmas Story

In the first six or so sentences I think that the lady in this story is maby going crazy. They talk about going to a doctor and and she denies it by saying "It's that out there" referring to the silos that have been blowing up for no reason.
I think that maby she doesn't know what to think about it and there is something wrong going on, and baby the couple in the story was loosing their hard work and money by the silo's blowing up.
The significance of the ending to the beginning of the story I think is that when he is riding his son's plane and moving down hill face and remembering when he had bought and spent just a little to much money for it, he was remembering good times in there life before all of the silo's had gone away.

A Christmas Story

In the beginning of A Christmas Story, the married couple are apoligizing to each other for the lose of something. The husband suggests to his wife that she go to talk with someone about her feelings. In my opinion, I think the couple lost their children, and they are in the grieving process. The wife accusses the silos to be the reason for all of their heart aches.
At the end of the story the husband is playing with his son's toy. I think he is realizing how much fun the toy must have been for his son, and this makes him think of happier times.
My reaction to the paper is that this couple is grieving from the lose of their children. This story is the perfect example of how hard it is for a parent to lose a child and to be able to move on with their life.

re, A Christmas Story

In the beginning I didn't know if she was the one who got hurt by or around the silo or possible fell from the silo. I didn't quite follow what the silo had to do with her fears, and why she would have the need to speak to a doctor about it.
Sometimes playing with toys or such things takes your mind off the grown up things that you have to deal with on an everyday bases. It gives a person a chance to go back in time to a more carefree day and fun. Just to let the wind blow in your face from the free wheeling down a drive way in his boy's airplane.
I didn't care for it to much I guess I was expecting something different from the title, I was expecting a story about Christmas not exploding silos.

Reaction to A Christmas Story

The story starts out in the middle of an interaction between two people which leads me to believe that they were attempting to have sex. It seems though that the woman is preoccupied by a new silo in their yard that could be dangerous and can't do it. Seems to me that the part with the empty bedroom with boxed up toys means that they had a child at one time. So by taking the plane down to the other farm the man was remembering the time with his son. So I believe that the couple was trying to conceive another child at the beginning of the story. This story seems to me to have parts where it allows the reader to sort of make their own assumptions as to what is happening.

A Christmas Story

In French's A Christmas Story, a couple broken by a hot summer and recent death's tries to escape the pain. The wife suffers silently, blaming the silos for killing a neighbor and a farmhand. The man, Will, tries to reassure her that the exploding silos will not bother them again. He's just had them inspected, and the explosion at the other farm was a freak incident. At first, it seems like their young son was killed, as the room has a rollaway bed and bozes filled with toys.
Once we are introduced to the airplane, things change. It is unclear to me whether or not "several miles below" means flying (in which case the boy is a young man) or the farm is on a mountain (and the boy would still be young). The ending is significant because by now, the reader knows the boy has died. It explains the boxes and the empty room. Will's last thought in the story occurs when he looks at the ruins of the Nordstrom's, and remembers when he bought the plane for his son at Christmas. My guess is that this signifies his son was a victim of the exploding silos.

A Christmas Story

In all honesty I don't really understand the point. I assume, after reading that there must have been a few accidents with the silos in their county and one was a close by neighbor. The begining starts out with a woman who, to my assumption seems to be sick. I don't really have a guess as to why she may be ill. At the end of the story the man takes his sons toy plane to drive by the neighbors and as he does this he remembers the Christmas he had boughten the plane for his son. I am not quite exactly sure why there is a significance to the ending of this story. There could have possibly been an accident with their silo and their son could have been injured of even passed away; due to the fact that he was never mentioned in this short piece of the story.

My overall response to this story is that I think it does not have enough information but it really allows you to use your imagination as to what happened before this. The story gives you some answers but it's up to you to uncover the truth.

A Christmas Story

In the beginning, It was very unclear to me. I didn't really understand what the story was about. I felt that something tragic must have happend because the man and woman were discussing whether or not they should see a doctor. Once I got to the end of the story I pretty much understood most of what was happening. I think there little boy died in the silo on the farm. At first I was very confused when I read the first couple of lines, but after I thought about it and got to the end it was more clear to me.

A Chirstmas Story

Within the first six sentences I read, I felt that someone is depressed or just sad, and something tragic happened in someones life, and they aren't sure on how to go about with getting help to try and make thing better for themselves. As I was reading along and got towards the end of the story I realized that their son had died also just like the other guy that had.

At first I was kind of confused about what was going on in the story, but when i went back a read again I understood that their son had died. I thought it was a pretty good story. It made you really concentrate on what you were reading, and really made you use your "creative" side a little in a way, if that's the right word. Overall, I thought it was a good short reading.
